Ok some of you may have seen this but I love this website. I especially love the the "Read these classics or go to hell" and the one about the children's Art work is classic. If you have already seen this site sorry for bringing it up but if you hadnt take a look…
Interesting, article, which does bring up the question of whether or not the soldiers themselves wanted to be memorialized in a “in your face” sort of fashion. Does it make the message sender less compassionate for indiscriminately using the names to promote his “compassionate” issue?
A more interesting point that I seem to have missed up until now (actually I think I heard about it a while back) is that the Army has built a free online game. I wonder if it is/could be used for selective recruiting/marketing for superior players?
The site the article is on was down all day, so I will post it as a comment for archival purposes. Please visit the original site first, as they deserve the hits/commerce.
There are items that have not proven to do much, but it doesn’t hurt to try… :)
This article also has a nice bite sized breakdown of what web 2.0 really is and some clues as to why there is so much money in internet sites with no business model (much like before the great .bomb bust of the late 90’s).
I always plan to learn how to really use a camera…. Of course I never take the time to learn… ;-)
I’ve been wondering what sort of tactics would be applied to candidates for national office in order to get them to pay attention to states assumed to be in the pocket of one party. I should have known it would originate in California, where so much of our political change has originated. I find it a bit creepy at first read, but they are attempting to tinker with something that hasn’t seen much tinkering in a very long time. I did not follow the link because the LA Times requires information in exchange for reading the full article. We’ll certainly hear more about it as time goes by, particularly if it frightens potential candidates and the political parties, which it should. If California succeeds and gets other states to follow suit, campaigns will change considerably or risk losing votes thought secure.
I still think the best thing that could happen in American politics would be creation and viability of more political parties whose candidates can win some elections. The American electorate, from all appearances, is not especially interested and prefers to keep it simple: ie, two parties that strongly resemble each other when you take a critical look. Most Americans appear to limit themselves to reacting only to emotionally charged issues and reacting only with emotion. This is easy to manipulate because it doesn’t require much by way of data, rather it requires only a few images, key words & issues to crank up the emotions of those you wish to manipulate. I keep hoping this state of affairs will change. I’d love to see the “country club” and “bible thumping” Republicans split into two parties for a start. The Democrats probably have so many divisions that they could split into 10 or more parties. That would certainly liven up political discourse and our range of choices among candidates.

These guys must have a really wild national convention.
I’m still trying to find a OS for people who know nothing about computers. the people at Knightwise.com say they can configure Ubuntu for your grandmother.
While there is no good way to hide your habits from Big Brother, there are a number of things you can do to make your internet travels much more difficult to follow.
FreeNAS server, an open source NAS (network attached storage) server (You load the software plug it up to a network and configure it via the web. Runs fast and installs easy on any old junky hardware you have around the house.
Everyone needs a server these days… ;-)

I am sure that the Evil one will enjoy this article.
Wow, where do I start with this one. I was discussing alternate fuel with a friend the other day and he stated that Bush had slashed the budget for Hydrogen car research. My response was that it was his program anyway, so he was ahead on “tree huggin points”. I was told that he just continued the Clinton hydrogen car plan.
Since I was completely ignorant as to the budgeting and who started the Hydrogen car plans I did some research (please correct me where I’m wrong, as it seems very very difficult to get actual numbers for what the government really spends).
First off from the tone of this article, it appears that the Hydrogen car plan was mostly a Bush effort. Clinton’s effort seemed to be based more around generating much higher fuel economy from gasoline (a worthy goal of 80mpg), and only gave 17 million a year of the plan to Hydrogen fuel cell research. Additionally Clinton’s chief Energy Department official in charge of conservation and alternative energy, Joseph J. Romm, wrote a book called “The Hype about Hydrogen”. So it would appear that officials associated with the Energy Department under Clinton were not very interested in Hydrogen energy.
Bush proposed a 5 year Hydrogen car plan starting in 2003 that would spend 1.2 Billion dollars over 5 years. As far as I can gather the breakdown is as follows:
2003 – 150 Million
2004 – 300 Million
2005 – 320 Million
2006 – 155 Million
2007 – 200 Million (currently proposed)
Which comes up to a little over 1.1 Billion (close enough to 1.2 Billion for round numbers eh). So if the program has a fixed point and is not an ongoing entitlement, the spending would have to be reduced so as to not over-run the budget for the project.
So it would appear to me that the plan is primarily Bush’s and that he spent about what he said he would.
All that said…
I want to know how the government can piss away 1.2 Billion of my tax dollars and I not have a freakin Hydrogen fuel car that I can drive slated for an assembly line somewhere!
I you check gasoline prices in other countries since 1996 it would seem that the rest of the world buys gasoline on the same markets as the US.
I would think the source of our heat could be a player in global warming.
Interesting read…
