California declares smoke ‘toxic’

Bad news if you smoke and live in the state of California, as the California Air Resources Board fingers second hand smoke as toxic. I wonder how they feel about second hand marijuana smoke…

I’ve read widely on this subject and it bothers me that one of the repeated accusations against tobacco companies is the use of bad science when maneuvers such as this one are based on same. I don’t like to breathe any sort of smoke, though I thoroughly enjoy the taste of smoked meat. However, I am willing to bet that a much greater risk to respiratory health in this country is from auto exhaust. Many more people drive in lanes of traffic filled with exhaust. Pedestrians and cycle riders are exposed to it. Why isn’t this body taking action against manufacturers of internal combustion engines or those who operate them? The answer is simple. Smokers are, and have been, easy targets of opportunity for many years. I don’t like smoking, prefer to avoid being around smokers, especially in crowded/poorly ventilated locations, but I see no reason to continue to hack at them with legal & regulatory machetes save as a means of continuing a campaign to eliminate smoking. It is silly and sad.
