Congress changing daylight-saving time.

Congress once again surprises us by introducing a whole new pain in the ass. I’m sure the big consulting firms are already drooling in anticipation of a year 2000-esque effort to fix everything from personal computers to flight control systems…

Lawmakers move to extend daylight-saving time
House and Senate negotiators on an energy bill agreed to begin daylight-saving time three weeks earlier, on the second Sunday in March, and extend it by one week to the first Sunday in November. The House bill would have added a month in the spring and another in the fall.

Oh man, why have daylight-savings time at all. We are no longer a nation of farmers for crying out loud!

I agree. Why not come out with a variable work schedule and clocks that work via signals from GPS network? That way everyone would have to be at work at 45 minutes after sunrise, and return home at 2 hours before sunset. That way you would always wake up with the sun and go to sleep with the sun. Time would be reduced to a percentage of the day that has passed, so some minutes would be longer than others…

Wouldn’t that screw up everything? You would need a calculator and a map to figure out airline flight schedules… :)

And then of course, each holiday (by the post office calendar) would get an extra 8 hours of “daylight” regardless of the time of year. We could then adjust the days for two weeks before and after so that you could make up the difference. Pretty soon you will need a Cray just to run your household clocks!

Daylight savings time was not for the famers. They could really care less what the clock says. It was started to bring daylight earlier to help the little kiddies get on the school bus. I think we should end it as kids go to school at different times now or year round. Not to mention that I could really care less if they have to wait for the bus in the dark.

Actually I don’t think it will be too long before your household clock will have more power than an old Cray… ;-)

Ok, let’s examine the history of Daylight Saving Time.

It starts to get interesting around page 3 or 4.

Well I think Rooster is right. It was to keep the wee ones in the daylight for school bus schedule. And the varible GPS thing. No way. We will end up working too long in the summer when the days are longer and we want to be off and less in the winter when the days are short.
