After reading some of the background article, can anyone tell me why there should be any support for H.R. 3997?

It is time for me to get my dead horse out of storage and beat it again. The financial industry, which includes all those who have anything to do with lending, banking, credit & debit processing, and financial data, pay lots of money for the government we have. They expect to be compensated. HR 3997 is compensation, just like the changes to bankruptcy law last year. How do we stop, or more realistically lessen the impact of commercial interests on government? I don’t rightly know or I’d be advocating for it. Revolution is no answer and likely to fail anyway. If it succeeded, it would only change those at the top and perhaps the uniforms worn by their representatives. Voting in greater numbers, and with serious debate and thought going into your choices might work, but getting people to go along with this is less likely than fomenting revolution. Writing and phoning elected officials sometimes has impact, but it is limited and tends to make them secretive & sneaky when compensating their corporate benefactors. Changing election law so that candidates can only spend a fixed amount, and having FCC mandate that all candidates eligible be given free TV & radio time to present their views might help a lot since it would definitely limit the per dollar influence of those wealthy individuals and corporations who use their money to directly influence elections and policy. Such a thing is seriously unlikely to ever be made into law by a Congress that is so well enriched and well treated by the existing system. Even if it were, I am doubtful it would withstand a constitutional challenge, since we have precedent that establishes money giving as speech.
This poor former horse, having once again withstood a beating, will now be put away for next time. That done, all I can seriously recommend is that you write or call your congress persons; e-mail counts; and let them know you feel strongly about this issue, and just what those strong feelings are. Be respectful, whether you mean it or not. It will make it much more likely that your communication will be counted and considered. It will also lessen the possibility that they’ll ask the Secret Service to investigate you as a potential threat. If some sources are to be believed, it will also lessen the possibility that you’ll be audited or otherwise troubled by the IRS.
