I really have to wonder about the telecom companies. They had broadband handed to them on gold platters. The CATV companies, long considered a bad joke because of poor service and terrible limits on choice, opted their way into broadband data service. No one, myself included, ever thought they’d make a go of it because the telcos had such a headstart in infrastructure, experience in bi-directional transmission, tecnology, and more money to lavish on such things.
I’ve met many more folks the past few years going for CATV broadband than anything the telcoms offer. Most are disgruntled, former telecom broadband customers. How stupid of the telecom companies to throw away such an opportunity. Maybe the opportunity is not so great as I imagine. I have no idea what it costs to provide ADSL, CATV broadband, or any other high speed connection. I also don’t know what sort of profit margin makes it worthwhile for any entity to offer these things. I can only suspect that too many of the telecom executives retained the monopolistic mindset prevelant among executives in that industry who spent much of their careers being the only game in town, whether as the original monolithic AT&T, or as one of the RBOC’s created by the dissolution of AT&T’s POTS network. If this is true, I may end up pleased that my investments in domestic telecommunications are relatively small. In the mean time, I think I’ll research Comcast and related stocks as they sound better all the time.

Well the Cable itself is capable of much more bandwidth than a copper pair and the switching method for cable is pushed farther out toward the customer. Both items make cable faster, however the Telecomm option of “Fiber to the Curb” would have blown cable out of the water. I think there is another post regarding RBOC’s and their “Fiber to the Curb” choices.
