Being a former employee of a Anheuser-Busch distributorship, I can tell you that they take the freshness thing VERY seriously. It was the employees job to ensure that the beer on the shelf was the freshest possible. The “born-on-dating” was a big indication of this, and a portion of job performance was judged on how the rotation was worked. If an older beer was at the back of the shelf, you could get dinged on it during your review.
Now, I’ve never personally experienced skunk beer as pulled straight from the shelf. I have encountered it when misplaced at the house and forgotten about.
Buddy of mine bought 8 cases of Bud Light at one time and had 3 of the 5 cases turn out to be skunk. He called A-B and was reimbursed for his “trouble”.
Freshness IS important after all.
